The History of Code and the Web
Every language on my list was invented by somebody. Most of them are older than I am.
- 1957: FORTRAN came out. It was one of the first programming languages that let people write code with words and math, not just numbers.
- 1972: Dennis Ritchie created the C language at Bell Labs. A lot of newer languages copy its style, including JavaScript and PHP.
- 1989: Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea for the World Wide Web while working at CERN in Switzerland.
- 1991: The first website went online. It was written in the first version of HTML.
- 1995: Brendan Eich created JavaScript in about 10 days. PHP came out the same year, made by Rasmus Lerdorf.
- 1996: CSS was released, so web pages could have colors, fonts and layouts without stuffing it all into the HTML.
- 2006: John Resig released jQuery, which made JavaScript much shorter and easier to write.
- 2011: Twitter released Bootstrap, a kit of ready-made styles for building websites faster.
- 2014: HTML5 became the official standard. It is the version of HTML this website uses.
