The History of Computers
The first computers filled whole rooms. Now a computer much faster than those fits in your pocket.
- 1837: Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine, a computer made of gears and powered by steam. It was never finished.
- 1843: Ada Lovelace wrote instructions for Babbage's machine. Many people call it the first computer program.
- 1945: ENIAC, one of the first electronic computers, was finished. It filled a large room and weighed about 30 tons.
- 1947: The transistor was invented at Bell Labs. Transistors are tiny switches, and they let computers get much smaller and faster.
- 1971: Intel made the 4004, the first microprocessor you could buy. It put the "brain" of a computer on one small chip.
- 1977: The Apple II, Commodore PET and TRS-80 came out, and people started having computers at home.
- 1981: IBM released the IBM PC. Most desktop computers today, including mine, still follow its basic design.
- 1999: Nvidia released the GeForce 256 and called it the first "GPU". My RTX 4060 is a much newer one.
- 2012: The Raspberry Pi went on sale. It is a whole computer the size of a credit card that cost about $35.
- 2017: AMD released the first Ryzen processors. My Ryzen 7 5700X is part of that family.
